During the time Abram lived, the whole world was under the influence of manmade deities and the traditional customs by the religious authorities. In fact, it was not deities but the control was with the religious leaders through the system they developed.
It was difficult to detach from such religious customs and traditions if someone wanted to think differently. Even such a thoughts were considered as a curse or punishable mistake in front of the society and religious customs. Religious customs they developed threatened common people to such cruel punishments that demands live sacrifices of their first born child or animals from their livestock.
All such malpractices such as sacrifices, offerings, donation, prayers, worships, pooja’, fireworks, temples, idol worships were not the supreme divine authorities directions but by the religious authorities to have full control over common people. In short, though religious customs a group of people took advantage over the entire world by the name of God, whereas there were no such Gods.
This became a serious issue for the existence of the universe because the original order of functionality started changing. At this stage the creator of this universe decided to restore the universe with original functionality as HE created. For that the first thing HE planned to bring someone out of the religious system developed by the evil minded people.
Call to Adventure
Breaking away from the human developed religious system and community was not an easy task, but adventurous. Abram and his wife coming out will be a tough task, so to make the process little easy first Terah got an inner call to refrain from the system and group of people including his son Abram. So the first segment of adventurous journey was crossing the Euphrates river and settle in an unknown place.
It was hard to leave the relatives and community and relocate to an unknown place that surged from your inner call which will not digest to others in your community. Further to it, taking the whole possession and their livestock with them and to cross the river will be a strange task.
How would they answer the questions of relatives, community people and religious authorities? What could be their mind set to surpass all their strong religious customs, especially to break the norms that anyone who split the system will be the victim of Gods anger? Because, the religious authorities will not allow them to break the system, since in future other people will follow suit. So with nail and tooth the whole community would have done everything possible to hold them back in their custody.
Terah and family reached to Harran, a major ancient city in Upper Mesopotamia and believed that this journey was during the fall of Ur. The temple of the moon God ‘Sin’ in Harran was called the House of Rejoicing and it was stablished by the refugee priesthood fleeing Ur during warfare. During that time the entire Mesopotamian and Babylonian civilisation were under the influence of the moon God ‘Sin’. So the journey of life by breaking down the human built ‘concepts and beliefs’ were really an adventurous one.
Crossing the Threshold
Almost 50 years the entire family lived in Harran, till the death of Terah. After his death, Abram got an inner calling again – “Go from your country to your father’s homeland which I will direct you”. Here the second exile started which was not an easy task, to move out and start afresh from a place you were settled long years. Here Abram has to take all initiatives by himself to break the community standards to leave to Harran.
So Abram went, as per the inner calling and Lot’ went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran. They set out for the land of Canaan. The real threshold is breaking the comfort zone of existences from all the walks of life. A journey is considered to be the means to reach a destination, but the process behind departing is the key element and most important. What could be the tough part in the process of departing in this journey? It’s convincing Sarai, his wife and Lot’ his brother’s son about this journey, while Abram himself was not aware where he was going.
When Abram arrived in Canaan he got an encounter from the supernatural divine personality and received may promises and prophesies. Since Abram realised it was a divine presence, he built an alter as per his traditional system.
Abram’s journey, carried on toward the south and on the way where ever he pitched his tent, he build an alter and worshiped the supernatural divine personality which he practiced from child hood.
Finally, Abram came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built an altar there too. There too he had a divine encounter and received the promise “I will make you to prosper as seeds and as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall your seeds too be numbered. ”While Abram was there, he met Melchizedek king of Salem the priest of the highest supreme divine personality. Abram gave him tithes of all blessings he had. Even though Abram had direct communication with the most-high, he connected with an earthly mentor to share his blessings with him as well.
During those times Abram was getting constant communication from the most-high and got another promise of getting a son from his own flesh and blood as your heir. Actually Abram got two promises about this subject twice and though each one was different promises. First promise was – “I will make your seeds as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed also be numbered. ”Second promise was – “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if indeed you can count them, so shall your offspring be.”
The first promise is related to a son and his generation who live according to the culture of this earth, and the second son and his generations who live according to the culture of the most-high. Initially Abram could not understand about the revelation of these two promises he received.
The main intention of this journey of Abram was to break the human developed customs and beliefs from Abram and start a new realm in and through him. So the supreme personality always tries to communicate with Abram in a divine perspective. So Abram understood temple or priests are not required as a mediator to communicate with the most-high. So when the most-high promised that the land Canaan will be given him as his own possession Abram kept thinking how can I know that, what is the assurance for the same? For that the most-high is making a covenant with Abram exactly like the Mesopotamian system which takes place between two individuals during those times.
Like we have a deed registration through government registrar, during those days according to Mesopotamian culture they cut animals in two and arranged the halves opposite each other. For small deeds they used to cut dove, for bigger deeds goat, ram etc. After cutting, they were placed opposite to each other, the parties involved in the deeds will walk together through the middle of these animals cut apart in the presence of religious priests. Means, when one party fails to meet the mutually agreed deed, other party can cut him like the animals they have cut during the deed.
So the most-high said to Abram to bring a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon. Abram brought all these, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other. As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking fire pot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. On that day the most-high made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land”. While Abram was sleeping, the presence of the most-high walked through the middle of the animals, which means if the deed fails from the side of most-high, Abram had the right to punish the most-high. Since only most-high gave promise from his side, Abram need not walk through the middle of the animals. Simultaneously the human traditions and customs during those days, most-high communicated and developed a faith in Abram.
Restoring a human custom to divine custom is not easy and might not be possible to transform the whole community as well. Hence a transformation should be always simple and humble, hence chosen a single micro family for the same who can trust and follow a divine call without hesitation. From one who has the divine nature of operation, Abram got a call by grace.
Moving forward according to an unseen and unheard nonphysical element and logical in fallen human nature, the most-high transformation happened with the human family to move according to HIS original plan of action. All earthly provision, protection and procedures of life should not be by demanding but by parenting of the creator.
